B.C.’s newly elected MLAs will get sworn in this week as the province awaits word on when Premier Christy Clark will recall the legislature and test the confidence of the house.
Clerk of the legislative assembly Craig James is slated to swear in B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver and his two fellow Green MLAs on Wednesday afternoon in Victoria.
Clark’s 43-member Liberal caucus will get sworn in the next morning, followed by the NDP’s 41 elected members in the afternoon.
Each MLA will earn a basic annual salary of $105,881.83 with additional pay for those holding ministerial or parliamentary positions.
Clark, who lost four ministers in the May 9 provincial election, has yet to say when she will swear in a new cabinet or recall the legislature to deliver a throne speech. She indicated last week that it would likely happen this month, but gave no definitive date.
She said at the time that she expects her government to fall on a confidence motion to the NDP-Green alliance once the house does return.
Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon would then have the option of calling an election or asking NDP Leader John Horgan to form a minority government based on his agreement with the Greens to vote together on confidence motions.
