Blaney wins federal NDP nod in new North Island-Powell River riding

Rachel Blaney of Campbell River has been nominated as the New Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2015 federal election in the newly formed riding of North Island-Powell River.

Blaney is the executive director of the Immigrant Welcome Centre, a not-for-profit organization that provides services for new Canadians, with offices in Campbell River and Courtenay. She has lived in the Campbell River area for 16 years.

At a nomination meeting held Nov. 22, she defeated Dave Coles, a retired union leader who has served as national president of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union.
