Users of Elk and Beaver Lake Regional Park are being advised to avoid swimming and to keep their dogs on leash after a blue-green algae bloom was found near the rowing centre beach area.

Blue-green algae can produce cyanotoxins, which can cause headaches and abdominal pain in humans and lethal liver damage in dogs.

The algae usually presents as a blue-green sheen or scum on the water, though the bloom can still be present without being visible.
