Saanich police blocked access to Mount Douglas Park after a body was found on the beach late Thursday afternoon.
The investigation was in its early stages and no details were available.
Officers from the patrol and detective divisions, and from the forensic detective section were at the scene.
The coroner arrived about 6 p.m.
Police tape was put up at the parking lot leading to the beach access.
