A body was spotted in the ocean Saturday about 11 kilometres west of the Tsawwassen ferry terminal by a boater who had set out from Vancouver Island.

The coast guard received a report about 9 a.m. about what was believed to be human remains, then contacted Outer Gulf Islands RCMP on Pender Island to assist.

Police responded with a coast guard crew from Ganges on Salt Spring Island and arrived at the scene about 10 a.m.

After it was determined that the remains were human, the body was recovered with help from the RCMP vessel Lindsay.

Police took the remains to Sidney before they were transported to Victoria General Hospital for identification and an autopsy to determine the cause of death, if possible.

The B.C. Coroners service has taken over the case and is expected to work with the RCMP in the identification effort.
