The District of Sooke has lifted its campfire ban.

Campfires were prohibited for about 30 days while Sooke and the surrounding area went through a dry spell.

Recent rain reduced the risk from extreme to high, allowing the ban to be lifted.

However, Sooke Fire Chief Steve Sorensen is warning the public to be careful.

“People still need to take precautions,” Sorensen said. “The underbrush is still dry and it won’t take long to start a fire.”

Fires should be no larger than 60 centimetres high and wide, and at least six metres from fences, property lines and structures, the department said. Water should also be nearby in case of any accidents.

Backyard and other open burnings are prohibited until Sept. 30. — Times Colonist
