North Cowichan is finally getting the recognition it’s been seeking from Canada Post.

Mailing addresses for some North Cowichan properties that are currently Duncan are expected to switch over next year to North Cowichan, the municipality said Friday.

It said North Cowichan has a long history of attempting to change the mailing address for its properties, but until recently, Canada Post had not approved the request.

After Langford successfully changed its postal address from Victoria last year, North Cowichan approached Canada Post again.

The change only affects addresses currently designated as Duncan. North Cowichan addresses using Crofton or Chemainus will not be affected.

Any mail for North Cowichan that’s addressed to Duncan will still be delivered because Duncan is a secondary address for that area in Canada Post’s database, the municipality said.

“For more than 150 years, North Cowichan has been incorporated as a municipality, yet many residents and businesses are unable to use it as their official mailing address,” North Cowichan Mayor Rob Douglas said in the statement.

“This lack of recognition causes ongoing confusion about where people actually live and do business.”

Douglas noted that even the municipal hall doesn’t have a postal address in North Cowichan. “It’s time to correct this long-standing issue so that everyone can proudly claim North Cowichan as their community.”
