Central Saanich police are warning the public after a large cougar was reported in the municipality this week.
The cougar was seen in the 7300 block of the Pat Bay Highway, near Mount Newton Cross Road, at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police said the cougar was moving east.
“No contact with humans reported, but please be aware,” police said on social media.
Police ask that people follow safety protocols when around the animals. Provincial guidelines for encounters say you should stay calm and keep the cougar in view, pick up children immediately, and back away slowly, ensuring that the cougar has a clear avenue of escape.
The safety tips also say to make yourself look as large as possible and keep the cougar in front of you at all times. Never run or turn your back on a cougar, as sudden movement may provoke an attack.
