A 37-year-old man faces a charge of pointing a firearm without lawful excuse in connection to a shooting that sent a 49-year-old businessman to hospital with serious injuries.
Nanaimo business owner Clint Smith was shot in the stomach and suffered serious injuries during a confrontation near the Millstone River on March 12. He and five others had gone to a homeless camp to try to recover a table saw and other items allegedly stolen from his shop, Ernie’s Blackpoint Repair.
Smith said last week on social media that he was put in a medically induced coma and had undergone three surgeries after being shot several times.
He did not discuss details of the incident, but said: “I do not condone reaction, violence, retribution, vengeance or any such other foolish sentiments.”
Craig Truckle, of Nanaimo, was arrested about 11 p.m. March 22 in downtown Nanaimo and taken into custody, Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien said Monday. The next day, one count of pointing a firearm without lawful excuse was sworn against him.
Truckle is schedule to appear Tuesday in Nanaimo provincial court.
