Canadian Coast Guard personnel raced to help a person having a medical emergency aboard a fish trawler off the coast of Cape Beale this month.
On Aug. 7, crews from the coast guard’s Bamfield station responded to calls for help from a trawler about 30 nautical miles offshore.
The station sent its fast-response craft out ahead of a lifeboat to get assistance there as quickly as possible.
When the craft reached the fishing boat, a coast guard rescue specialist climbed up a 60-foot rope ladder and was able to begin assessment and care of the patient, the coast guard said.
The lifeboat arrived as the patient was stabilized and prepared for transport.
A Cormorant helicopter from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron out of Comox arrived and the patient was hoisted aboard and taken to hospital for medical attention.
The coast guard did not reveal which hospital treated the patient or the nature of of the medical emergency.
