The B.C. Liberals announced Sunday that Colwood businessman Chris Ricketts will be their candidate in the riding of Esquimalt-Royal Roads in next spring's provincial election.

Ricketts, who owns a residential-construction company, was acclaimed as the candidate at a selection meeting Sunday afternoon.

The riding is held by the NDP's Maurine Karagianis. The election will be held on May 14. In the 2009 election, Karagianis received 11,514 votes, well ahead of Liberal candidate Carl Ratsoy's 6,579 and B.C. Green party leader Jane Sterk's 3,664.

Karagianis was first elected in 2005.
