Saanich police are alerting the public after a cougar was spotted heading toward Playfair Park on Monday morning.
The cougar was seen in the 1200 block of Judge Place about 10:30 a.m., police said.
Officers were unable to locate the cougar, Const. Sandra Bauch said in a statement.
“We are asking member of the public attending the area to be aware of the recent cougar sighting,” she said.
Conservation officers have been informed of the sighting.
In July, there were four reported cougar sightings in Saanich but the animals have yet to be located.
Three sightings were near Little Mount Douglas and the nearby Lochside trail. Another sighting at Colquitz Park near Tillicum Mall — of a mother cougar and two cubs — was reported to Saanich police on July 15.
Police have previously said that there are no reports of aggressive behaviour from the cougars, but are still advising people to be aware of their surroundings and their pets.
If you see a cougar, keep the animal in front of you at all times to stay safe, advises the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.
Do not run or turn your back. Make yourself look as large as possible by raising your hands, the service says. If a cougar shows interest or begins following you, respond aggressively and maintain eye contact.
Anyone who sees a cougar is asked to give a report to Saanich Police and the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
