Courtenay Coun. David Michael Frisch is on a leave of absence from city hall duties because he is facing a criminal charge of assault.
The charge is related to a Jan. 7 incident, provincial records show. The file is designated a K file, which refers to domestic incidents.
Frisch is on a mandatory leave of absence as required under the Community Charter, the City of Courtenay said in a brief statement on Friday. The leave of absence continues until the matter is concluded.
Frisch had a court appearance in Courtenay provincial court on Thursday.
The city said that because the matter is before the courts, it will not be commenting.
