GRAY, Edna
Born July 20th, 1916 in Edmonton, Alberta. Died peacefully in her sleep October 23rd, 2012 at the beautiful age of 96. Although born in Edmonton, Edna moved to Oak Bay with her family at 16 months and thus began her long career as an Oak Bay civilian. In the next 94 years, Edna moved four times, always within the same 5 block radius of her beloved Oak Bay and always within walking distance of the ocean. She built her life around her small but lively family: husband of 62 years, Hugh (predeceased), son Barry, daughter-in-law Diane and granddaughter, Erin. Edna always believed in "keeping busy", holding many unique and varied jobs: working in the laundry at the Crystal Gardens in the 1930's, on board the CPR ships that ran the coastal route to Prince Rupert in the 1940's, as an owner of a dance cabaret with her husband in the 1960's. Expert knitter, Agatha Christie enthusiast, tenacious gardener and world traveller, Edna certainly had a busy and fulfilled life, all the while keeping time generously reserved for countless friends and family and a "nice cup of tea". She will be remembered for her marvelous humour, her dancing and that mischievous sparkle in her eye. The family wishes to extend a deeply felt thank you to all the staff of Oak Bay Lodge for their untiring commitment, support, compassion and professionalism throughout Edna's last years.
No service by request. Edna wished that donations in her memory may be made to the Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island.

LAWSON, Sheila Elizabeth
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sheila Elizabeth Lawson, nee MacArthur, at the age of 86 years on October 24, 2012. She had been confined to bed for several months since fracturing her hip in early January. She passed away peacefully in her sleep after a lovely visit with her family the night before. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Douglas, in 1989. She is survived by her sons, David and Ian, daughters-in-law Lindsay and Margaret, grandchildren Andrew (Samantha), Mark (Sarah), Fiona, Douglas (Nicole) and James, sister-in-law Cora, brother-in-law William Bartlett and great-grand-daughter Liadan. Sheila was born in Calgary and raised with her brothers Ian and Donald and sister Mary in Weyburn and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, before her father's final transfer by the Bank of Montreal to Victoria where he retired. It was here in 1945 that she met Douglas at a serviceman's dance and married him after a whirlwind courtship. In the years that followed they raised their two sons in Victoria while Douglas worked as a realtor and insurance salesman and Sheila as a homemaker. They were charter members of the Cosmopolitan Club and devoted considerable time to fundraising for various charities as well as enjoying the camaraderie of club membership. Sheila and Douglas loved dancing and even won competitions. They both enjoyed swimming and gardening and in their later years took up golf. For many years they were a fixture at the Cedar Hill Golf course where they drove their own Harley Davidson golf cart with the trim on top. They vacationed each summer on the Island, favoring Parksville in their later years where they introduced their grandchildren to the game of golf. Sheila loved fashion and fashion magazines and in her younger years was an avid seamstress. She delighted in shopping whether or not she made a purchase and was routinely recognized by the clerks at the cosmetic counter of her favorite drug store, especially on the seniors' day each month. Sheila remained in the family home on Oak Crest Drive after Douglas passed away in 1989 and in the years that followed developed a friendship with Bert Santarossa, a horticulturist. Until shortly before his death last year, Bert took Sheila out for dinner each week at Laurel Point where they enjoyed the view of the harbour. In her later years, Sheila's travel was limited to drives to Cobble Hill for Christmas dinner with the Early Family, Ian's in-laws, and was always delighted at the Lawson family Christmas dinners a few days later, as well as, other special family occasions throughout the year in Ian and Margaret's home. The family would like to thank the nursing and administrative staff at the Lodge at Broadmead and Glengarry Hospital for the care and support they provided to our mother and our family.
A Celebration of Life Tea will be held to remember Sheila on Saturday, November 10th from 2: 00 to 5: 00 at Ian and Margaret's home for all her family and friends. Flowers are gratefully declined and friends are invited to make a donation in Sheila's name to the charity of their choice.

Marion held many different jobs to help support the family including positions with the Ministry of Human Resources, Crofton Pulp & Paper Mill, ICBC and the Ministry of Transportation. With every new town and every new workplace, Marion built lasting friendships. She was always surrounded by amazing friends and neighbours who loved her like she was family. Marion was a mom who arranged snacks in carousels and had all the craft materials on hand to follow along with Mr. Dressup. She was a grandma who cherished her grandkids and played chase or hide-and-seek or read books with the kids for hours. She was a wife who adored her husband, went dancing with him every Saturday, and supported him unfailingly throughout their lives together. Marion always believed that her family was her greatest accomplishment. Her passing has left a very large hole in that family. She will be dearly missed.
