COLETTE, Marie Roy (nee Barber)

March 29th, 1933 - August 29th, 2012

With great sadness we announce that our mother peacefully slipped away August 29, 2012 with family by her side. Born in Vancouver, B.C., mom had many interesting stories of growing up with her family travelling to different areas of BC and Alberta while her father designed many of the bridges and trestles for the trans-Canada railway. Mom settled in Vancouver, where she met our father, and worked as a marine operator among other switchboard jobs, Mom swam competitively and was on the 1954 British Empire Games team. Mom spent many hours volunteering for different organizations such as Pony club, Riding for the Disabled, Special Olympics as well as high school track and field. Mom also worked for Michell Farms for many years. Mom loved participating in many activities such as driving her pony and buggy, X-C skiing, racewalking, and coaching. After years of living a simple life of moderation and traditional values, mom was rewarded with the great enjoyment she had in the world of cruising where she made many friends. Having raised 4 children largely on her own, with loving husband Ray Roy, who was a mariner working at sea most of our lives, (we lost dad to cancer in 2007), we remember mom as strong and competent, tackling lifes challenges head-on including her battle with cancer (surpassing all expectations). We would like to thank Dr. Jim Laing and all the wonderful staff at Victoria Hospice for their kindness and loving care. Left to cherish special memories are children Lisa, Celia (Terry Michell), Michael (Sacha), Stephen (Gordana) and 15 grandchildren who mom (gramma) loved deeply and was so very proud of.

Friends and family are invited to join us at a Celebration of Life in honour of our mother, on September 29th, 2012 at The Beachhouse Restaurant, 5109 Cordova Bay Rd, Victoria from 1 to 4pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to Victoria Hospice or a hospice of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

HULL, Joan Gladys April 11, 1917 - September 4, 2012

Joan was born in 1917, in London, England, during the First World War. Her father, John Thomas Joy, was away for long periods of time serving in Palestine with the army. He was gone so long that Joan remembers not being sure of who he was on return, a man in a coarse and scratchy wool uniform. Joan's mother Emily was an actress, and appeared in some stage plays in the early 1900's.

In those days, milk was still delivered by horse drawn wagons in London. One day, while walking backwards in the street, just for fun, she was run over and nearly trampled by a team of horses, falling underneath them. The horses, perhaps having experience with this, just carefully stepped around her.

Growing up during the depression of the 1930's could be tough. Sometimes the family meal consisted of just fat smeared on bread, and perhaps a cup of tea. Joan's father did what he could to make a living. He had an artistic flair, and worked for a while for the company that made "Guinness" beer. He came up with some of the advertising logos that endured for many years. There was time though, for the occasional bicycling trip to the seashore, and some swimming.

Just as things started looking up, the Second World War came along, and London suffered greatly from the "blitz"-the concentrated German bombing campaign. Joan volunteered for civil defense, and helped coordinate fire fighting. She saw some horrendous sights at times, while walking home in the morning after a night of bombing. She was once just missed by a falling piece of shrapnel that came close enough to tear her raincoat. The family endured through this however. One night Emily, Joan's mother, was knocked out of bed by the concussion of a nearby bomb, and sleepily climbed back in muttering, "damned inconsiderate neighbours!"

Later, Joan enlisted in the Royal Navy, and was posted to the far north of Scotland where she worked as a signal decoder. There she met future husband Norman, a Canadian pilot then acting as a flying instructor for the Royal Air Force. They managed to find some time to date and see a bit of Britain, enjoying the small villages and local pubs. A favorite spot was Bournemouth on the south coast. They married in 1944 in a London church-missing its roof due to bombing!

After the war, she embarked on a new life in Canada, sailing to Quebec, and taking the train across the country to Victoria. As a Londoner, she was a little taken aback by the wide-open spaces, and seemingly endless forest and prairie. They traveled around a lot, as Norman was still in the Air Force, and saw a lot of Canada and also Europe.

During this time she raised three children, and also worked much of the time to bring in some extra money, her energy never flagging. Joan was always an optimist, seeing the good side in people and never dwelling on the negative. She was also quite social, and enjoyed talking with people, and was not averse to taking a good shot of rum now and then. She was employed for over twenty-five years with Tilden, a car rental company. Even at eighty she had no interest in slowing down, and was still doing security work for the Commissionaires. Joan was also active in the Canadian Legion and the Ex-Wrens Association.

Life was transient in the Air Force, with moves often coming every three years or so. But eventually Norman and Joy settled down and bought a house in Sidney, BC. It was close to the airport, and so had the familiar sound of planes taking off and landing. They had a long retirement in Sidney, about thirty years, before Alzheimer's disease forced a move into a care facility.

She passed away on September 4th, 2012. A celebration of her life will be held at 1318 Denman Street on September 16th, 4pm.
