The Department of Defence demolition range at Bentinck Island, near Race Rocks, will be in use daily from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 1-4.

DND said that the training carried out there is needed for military members to work on their skills.

Local residents will likely be unaware of the activities being carried out, although the sound might carry under certain atmospheric conditions.

DND said that training is planned to limit acoustic impacts to marine mammals, and a third-party observer will be on hand to advise military staff when the range is clear of whales.

There will be delays if whales are seen in or moving toward the range.

The island has been used for demolition since 1962.
