Dididaht First Nation asks members to stay indoors following 'tragic' incident in community

All community members are being asked to stay indoors until RCMP gives an all clear, says chief councillor Judi Thomas

The chief councillor of the Ditidaht First Nation is asking community members to stay indoors and keep their windows closed as RCMP officers mobilize in the community for an incident on Saturday.

RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said police are on scene near Lake Cowichan for a “situation allegedly involving a weapon,” but had no further details to provide.

Judi Thomas said in a statement around 11 a.m. Saturday that RCMP notified her of a “tragic situation” at the First Nation.

All community members are being asked to stay indoors and “allow the RCMP to carry their duties to ensure the safety of everyone,” she said.

The nation’s visitor centre and store near Nitinaht Lake announced that it would close Saturday.

Thomas said the nation is preparing food and mutual support that will available for members once RCMP give the all clear for people to gather.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.
