Police said the dog that was shot was neither muzzled nor leashed, as is required for dogs deemed dangerous.

A Victoria police officer shot and killed a dog early Monday after it lunged at the officer during an arrest on Ellice Street in the Rock Bay area.

The officer was in the process of arresting a man with outstanding warrants about 3:30 a.m. when the dog emerged from a nearby tent and lunged at and chased the officer.

“Fearing serious injury, the officer discharged their firearm, killing the dog,” police said in a statement.

An on-duty officer from the Integrated Canine Unit arrived to give the dog medical aid but it did not survive.

Police said they later learned the dog was designated as dangerous, which required it to be muzzled and leashed.

“However, neither of these requirements were met at the time of the incident,” police said.

“We understand people may feel strongly about the well-being of this dog. Rest assured the decision was not made lightly.”

The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital by police and cremated, as requested by the owner.
