The artist behind two distinctive driftwood sculptures that were stolen from the beach at Esquimalt Lagoon and returned to him by West Shore RCMP is thanking police for their efforts.
The sculptures of a squirrel and a kingfisher were found by a member of the public in a Metchosin ditch. The person then contacted police.
“They are in rough shape, but I can definitely put them back together and reinstall them,” Paul Lewis said in a Facebook post. They’ll be outfitted with tracking devices when back on display, he said.
A hummingbird sculpture is still missing while the fourth sculpture in the set, depicting an owl, wasn’t taken but was damaged.
“Huge thank you to the community for helping out with getting the word out there, and the help to maintain and upgrade the beloved sculptures,” Lewis said.
Police are still investigating and are asking people with information to call West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264, or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
