A suspected impaired driver was issued a 90-day roadside driving prohibition and had his vehicle impounded for 30 days after speeding through a school zone on Gabriola Island last week.

Gabriola Island RCMP were conducting traffic control about 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at Gabriola Elementary School on North Road when they stopped the vehicle for exceeding the 30 km/h speed limit.

That led to the driver being evaluated for impairment.

Police said the driver was also charged with several Motor Vehicle Act infractions.

“Members of the Gabriola Island RCMP are doing their best to keep the community safe,” said Cons. Mark Biggar. “This is just one example of our efforts [of] keeping impaired drivers off the road, especially during daylight hours on school days.”
