A driver in Oak Bay learned an expensive lesson after being pulled over for speeding in a school zone.
Oak Bay police were conducting traffic enforcement on Cadboro Bay Road near Cranmore Road on Sept. 18 when they clocked a driver going 52 kilometres an hour in a 30 km/hr school zone.
The driver pulled over in a no-parking zone, blocking a bike lane, and produced an expired driver’s licence, according to police.
A licensed driver could not be found to operate the vehicle, so it was towed from the scene.
The driver was issued a ticket for speeding in a school zone — a fine of $196 — and fined another $276 for driving without a valid licence.
Towing and impound charges were also added to the bill.
Two days earlier, a concerned citizen tipped off Oak Bay police after seeing an unconscious driver in a vehicle parked on Broom Drive near Beach Drive.
When police arrived, officers found the vehicle was running and the driver asleep in the driver’s seat.
He woke up and pressed the accelerator when police opened the door.
Police said the driver displayed signs of alcohol impairment. He was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
