A woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after two pickup trucks collided just north of the Split Rock viewpoint near the top of the Malahat.
The crash happened about 8 a.m. and closed the highway in both directions.
The trucks are believed to have been headed in opposite directions when one crossed the centre line, said Malahat Fire Chief Rob Patterson.
One of the vehicles rolled over from the impact.
The crash happened in an area where there are no median barricades dividing the highway.
CHEK News reported that the woman, who was driving one of the trucks, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other driver wasn’t seriously hurt.
The drivers did not have any passengers in their vehicles.
Crash scene analysts have ruled out drugs and alcohol, but say weather may have been a factor.
Patterson said conditions were challenging at the time of the collision.
“It was raining, it was foggy, it was absolutely terrible driving conditions.”
