The driver responsible for a bizarre rear-end crash that backed up traffic on the Malahat last Friday afternoon was prohibited from being behind the wheel and faces charges, say West Shore RCMP.
The collision at 2:50 p.m. just north of Finlayson Arm was triggered when traffic slowed suddenly in the northbound lane.
West Shore RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Nancy Saggar said most vehicles came to a safe stop, but one vehicle, a 2007 Chrysler Sebring, did not stop and rear-ended a 2021 Subaru Forrester.
The impact of the collision was so intense that the Subaru wound up rolling up over the hood and on top of the roof of the Sebring.
The collision shut the highway down in both directions for an hour while crews worked to clear the scene, causing delays for hundreds of commuters on a busy Friday afternoon.
Saggar said the driver of the Sebring was a prohibited driver and will be facing charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.
“Remarkably, no injuries were reported in this collision,” said Saggar.
