A dump truck that swerved to miss stopped traffic went off the Trans-Canada Highway near Leigh Road in Langford on Friday, leading to backups for about 90 minutes.
West Shore RCMP responded to a 911 call about noon and found that a northbound dump truck with a load of rock had left the highway and collided with a rock face.
The truck driver was the only person injured.
Speed and alcohol were not factors, and it appears the driver was rounding a corner when he unexpectedly came upon a line of traffic that was stopped.
“In order to avoid collision with other people, he basically decided to go off-road,” said West Shore RCMP Const. Nancy Saggar.
Traffic was initially stopped in both directions for about 15 minutes before the highway was opened to one lane in both directions.
“It took about an hour and a half to get the proper tow trucks out there because it’s such a large vehicle,” Saggar said.
