A Duncan family doctor has been suspended for having a relationship with a patient, according to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.

Dr. Andre Jacob de Wit entered the personal and sexual relationship with a patient in 2011.

The patient did not make a formal complaint.

“Dr. de Wit informed the college of these events and acknowledged that the conduct should be penalized,” the college said in a statement.

The licensing and regulatory body suspended de Wit from practising for six months, beginning March 1, with three months stayed if terms and conditions are met.

De Wit consented to a formal reprimand, counselling and a multi-disciplinary assessment program. He will be accompanied by a chaperone during exams of a sensitive nature involving female patients.

He also consented to be mentored by a physician, participate in continuing medical education in ethics and professionalism, as well as monitoring of his practice by the College.
