Elk Lake added to list of lakes with blue-green algae warning

Blue-green algae can produce toxins

A blue-green algae warning has been issued for Elk Lake, bringing to five the number of lakes in the capital region where the algae has been detected.

The Elk Lake advisory, which came a day after an advisory for Thetis Lake, followed notices for Durrance Lake, Beaver Lake and Prior Lake.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that can cause headaches and abdominal pain in people and be fatal for dogs, so park users are being advised to keep dogs on a leash to prevent them from drinking or swimming in the lakes.

The advisories are issued by the Capital Regional District in consultation with Island Health.
