On Monday, new traffic lights and pedestrian crossings will be operating at the intersection of Esquimalt and Harbour roads, at the western approach to the Johnson Street Bridge.
Cyclists on Harbour Road will be able to activate the lights by positioning their bikes over a new bike detector or loop. New crosswalks and accessible sidewalks are being added. A new extension of Harbour Road will connect to the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort and the waterfront.
The existing Harbour Road, north of Esquimalt Road, will remain closed to vehicles while construction continues on the west side of the bridge. Cyclist and pedestrian access remains open.
The work is part of the Johnson Street Bridge replacement project. Speed limit in the construction zone is 20 km/h.
Drivers can expect minor delays while the timing of traffic signals is adjusted to reflect new traffic patterns. Pedestrians should be aware of sidewalk detours.
In January, construction will take place on the other side of the bridge. Utility lines will be relocated and the bascule pier will be built. That’s the part of the bridge that contains mechanical and electrical systems that open and close the bridge for marine traffic.
Once complete, the new bridge will include on-road bike lanes, a trail for pedestrians and cyclists and a dedicated pedestrian pathway. There will also be three lanes for vehicle traffic.
The city plans to create three new plazas where the public can sit and look out at the harbour, and a new waterfront park.
