Two drivers have had their vehicles impounded for a week and are out more than $800 each after being caught for excessive speeding in the Quadra Street school zone at George Jay Elementary.
One driver was caught travelling at 90 kilometres an hour Tuesday and the other was going 83 in the 30 km/h school zone. More than 40 km/h over the limit is considered excessive speed.
The combination of their $368 tickets and a $461 high-risk driver premium from ICBC totals $829 per driver.
“Ninety kilometres [an hour] in a 30 zone is ridiculous,” said Victoria police Const. Cam McIntyre. “It’s important that the message gets across that that’s not acceptable, and it puts our children and our school staff and our young families at serious risk for their safety.”
McIntyre said still another driver was caught in the same school zone last week going 73.
Saanich police had an excessive-speeding case of their own to deal with on Wednesday, clocking a vehicle at 120 km/h in a 50 zone that happened to be right in front of police headquarters on Vernon Avenue.
The person stopped had four previous driving prohibitions.
Saanich police Const. Markus Anastasiades said there have been 13 excessive speeders ticketed in the municipality so far this month — including one travelling more than 1oo km over the speed limit.
Most have been on the Patricia Bay Highway or Trans-Canada Highway, but two have been in 50 km/h zones on regular roads.
