A 37-year-old man is dead after what police believe to be a targeted shooting in Metchosin on Friday evening.

“This is was not a random act of violence. Initial evidence gathered at the scene led investigators to believe that this was a targeted incident,” Const. Alex Bérubé, media relations officer for West Shore RCMP, told CHEK News.

Police have released little information about the shooting or the victim, saying only that he lived in Metchosin and was known to police. They have not released the man’s name, but said his next of kin has been notified.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation.

The shooter remains at large. Police do not believe there is any threat to the general public.

“We understand that the public may feel uneasy about the situation that happened [Friday] night in Metchosin,” Bérubé said. “However, we can let them know that there were a huge number of police resources deployed in the area.”

Police were called to the 4600 block of Kangaroo Road, near Badger Place, around 9 p.m. Friday for a report that a man had been shot.

Officers found a man dead at the scene.

Sooke Road was closed between Impala and Humpback roads for much of Saturday as investigators searched the area around the crime scene. The road reopened about 3:30 p.m.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting and anyone who was in the area between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Friday to contact VIIMCU at 250-380-6211 or West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264.
