Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will be in Nanaimo on Monday to reveal the party’s plan to reduce grocery costs.
The price of groceries grew 8.5 per cent in July compared with last year, down from 9.1 per cent year-over-year gain in June, according to Statistics Canada. On a month-over-month basis, grocery prices rose slower than overall inflation in July.
Singh will be joined by NDP MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith, Lisa Marie Barron.
Following the announcement, Singh and Barron will visit the Nanaimo Harbour City Seniors, the Kw’umut Lelum Wellness Centre and will end the day at the Nanaimo-Ladysmith NDP nomination meeting.
In 2021, Barron narrowly defeated Conservative Party of Canada candidate Tamara Kronis.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in B.C. on Friday visiting emergency services leader in the fire ravaged Central Okanagan.
The next federal election must occur before Oct. 20, 2025.
