A vacant Nanaimo building that housed squatters was the site of a suspicious blaze on Wednesday morning.
The cause has not been determined, said Stuart Kenning, assistant fire chief for Nanaimo Fire Rescue.
Nanaimo firefighters responded about 11:30 a.m. to the former medical clinic at 340 Campbell St. with four engines and about 20 personnel, he said.
A person outside the two-storey building told firefighters they thought there might be someone inside, but no one was found in an extensive search, Kenning said.
A room was damaged and there was smoke damage in much of the structure.
