A small fire on the exterior of the band building at Wellington Secondary School in Nanaimo on Monday morning is being considered suspicious.

Nanaimo firefighters were called to the scene at 6:40 a.m. and were able to quickly put it out, said Assistant Chief David Dales.

No one was hurt.

The majority of the damage was on the outside of the building at 3135 Mexicana Rd., with some minor water damage inside, he said.

School district staff were on site during the day Monday, said spokesman Dale Burgos.

A plan has been put in placed to move the band program into the school’s multipurpose room, he said.

The band building’s door was damaged because firefighters had to make a forcible entry, Dales said.

The fire is considered suspicious because it was most likely caused by humans, he said. RCMP were called to the scene and are investigating along with fire department officials.
