Fire destroyed a houseboat Tuesday night in an area of water adjacent to the Ladysmith Maritime Society.
Just before 8 p.m., Ladysmith Fire was called to the marina, where many derelict boats are moored, and found the houseboat engulfed in flames.
Firefighters couldn’t access the boat, so the Canadian Coast Guard was called in to assist.
Ladysmith Fire Chief Ray Delcourt said it was unclear if anyone was on board at the time but by midnight, RCMP made contact with the owner, who was staying with a friend.
The boat burned down to the water line.
Delcourt said it’s unclear what caused the blaze and the level of damage will make it difficult to investigate.
“We haven't heard anything about anyone running away or leaving the scene, somebody suspicious,” Delcourt said.
