Investigators are looking for the cause of a fire in a recycling yard at Ellice Recycle on John Street in Victoria on Friday evening.
The fire department said in a social media post that calls came in for a “container fire” in Rock Bay at around 6:20 p.m. While en route, the fire captain made the call to mobilize the entire B platoon — then at the time getting ready for their evening meal — for the blaze.
“Upon arrival, it was evident that upgrading was a good call,” the post said, adding that firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a two-storey pile of lumber that was inches away.
An excavator operator from Chew Excavation helped firefighters move combustible material away from the scene, the department said.
The fire burned in organic materials; no hazardous materials were involved.
No staff were at the yard at the time of the fire and the gates were closed.
