An overheated pot ignited the cabinets in a fourth-floor apartment on Thursday but Victoria firefighters stopped the fire before it spread to the roof structure.
The firefighter in charge of the response said the fire alarm at the four-storey apartment at 1165 Yates St. went off at 5:35 p.m.
By the time firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were visible inside the apartment.
A ladder truck was manoeuvred into place at the rear of the building in case the fire team needed to cut a hole in the roof, but that proved unnecessary.
The fire was confined to the one unit, with some water making its way to the unit directly below.
One woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
