A significant construction project on Goldstream Avenue starts on Monday and will continue in stages throughout the year, causing traffic headaches for locals, commuters and businesses.
Two water mains under Goldstream between Leigh Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway are being replaced with one larger iron pipe. The current pipes are made of asbestos-cement piping and considered seismically at risk.
Estimated to take until late December to complete, the 1.6-kilometre replacement project will be done in segments starting at Veterans Memorial and moving west. Work crews will operate between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and some night work will also be scheduled.
The $8-million project by the Capital Regional District has been contracted to Colquitz Engineering and CRD Forces.
Starting Monday and through to Feb. 10, Goldstream Avenue will be closed to through eastbound traffic between Veterans Memorial and the roundabout at Bryn Maur Road.
However, local traffic will still be able to drive eastbound to the businesses at this location. Driveway access will be maintained to all businesses in the work area.
The City of Langford said it will also work with all businesses to advertise on their behalf that businesses are still open.
B.C. Transit and emergency vehicles will have full access through this work location.
The city said the project is being done in sections to best manage traffic and will start at the east end of Veterans Memorial Parkway to get out of the downtown area before the warmer weather and special events occur.
Traffic control personnel will be on-site during working hours to assist vehicle and pedestrian access to local businesses in the affected area. There is a parking facility on Claude Road that the public can use to walk to local businesses.
Updated traffic advisories will be issued weekly or more frequently if required at the City of Langford’s website.
