A giant coal-handling component is carried by barge to Point Hope Shipyards at the Inner Harbour.

Paddlers pass by a barge carrying a part for a massive coal stacker reclaimer, which arrived Friday at Point Hope Maritime shipyard at the Inner Harbour.

The reclaimer, destined for North Vancouver when complete, will be used to stockpile coal, fed by a conveyor. The 231-tonne machine is being built by United Engineering in Sidney and barged to its sister company to be assembled and tested.

It will start to take shape as more components are made and barged, between now and the end of July. The manufacturing project represents an estimated 60,000 work hours for United staff — 45 workers toiling for 16 months — and is expected to have a spinoff effect for subtrades, contractors and suppliers in the region.
