Emergency responders evacuated a downtown Victoria building due to hazardous materials on Thursday.

Victoria police officers and firefighters, the Capital Regional District’s haz-mat team and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team responded to Swift and Store streets about 3 p.m.

About 3:45 p.m., VicPD said the cause of the incident had yet to be determined but that there was no risk to public safety.

Police said the Emergency Response Team was involved because specialized training and equipment was needed.

A witness told the Times Colonist that someone dumped a potentially dangerous chemical inside the Cool Aid Society’s Swift House, but that could not be confirmed.

One man was taken away in handcuffs but was not known Thursday evening why or whether charges would be laid.
