Strong winds are expected for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands Monday evening.

Environment Canada said a frontal system is bringing strong southeasterly winds of between 70 and 90 kilometres per hour before easing off just before midnight.

B.C. Ferries has already cancelled two sailings — the noon and 4 p.m. departures from Tsawwassen and the 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. sailings from Swartz Bay.

The 7 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen and the 9 p.m. sailing from Swartz Bay are also at risk of cancellation.

Shortly before 4 p.m., the ferry company cancelled the 8 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen for Duke Point and the 10:45 p.m. sailing from Duke Point.

Ferries between Comox and Powell River were also cancelled Monday.

The weather agency warned the strong winds could throw loose objects and cause injury or damage and be strong enough to snap tree branches.

It also warned there may be power outages as a result of trees falling on power lines.

The latest wind event arrives after a storm on Saturday that resulted in the cancellation of ferry sailings on some routes and knocked out power for thousands on Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and in the Lower Mainland.

The forecast calls for showers through to Wednesday in Greater Victoria, but all the wind and rain is expected to disappear on Thursday for a run of sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures for the rest of the week and into the weekend, according to Environment Canada.

Greater Victoria will see sunny skies and a high of 11 on Thursday, a high of 14 on Friday and then 19 on Saturday and 17 on Sunday, with overnight lows at 6 on the weekend.
