One man was airlifted to hospital after his logging truck tipped over, spilling its load onto Highway 14 in Shirley.

The truck rolled over around 1:30 p.m. about 100 metres south of the Muir Creek bridge, 13 kilometres west of Otter Point Road.

Sooke RCMP, Shirley volunteer firefighters and B.C. Ambulance responded to the scene. The driver of the truck has unknown injuries.

Rick Fonger, who owns the nearby Ocean Wilderness Inn, said the scene was “a mess.” The truck flipped on the driver’s side, which meant firefighters had to work carefully to extricate the driver.

The wreckage was cleared and the road was reopened around 4 p.m.

RCMP are investigating what caused the truck to tip over.
