Highway 14 between Jordan River and Port Renfrew is expected to reopen by 5 p.m. Wednesday, says highway-maintenance contractor Emcon Services.

The highway experienced several washouts and culvert damage during stormy weather last weekend, after water from heavy rain streamed down hillsides, overwhelming some ditches and culverts and collapsing road shoulders.

The Ministry of Transportation said there were six separate areas of the highway that needed culvert replacement or basic road work, including a site where the rushing water caused piles of rocks and trees.

Work on a 35-kilometre stretch of the highway that was damaged began immediately after the problems were discovered, it said, adding geotechnical work was completed Sunday morning.

While the highway was being repaired, Port Renfrew-bound traffic was temporarily detoured to the Pacific Marine Road, which links the community to Lake Cowichan.
