Highway 14 between Jordan River and Port Renfrew is expected to reopen by late Wednesday, says the Transportation Ministry.

The highway experienced several washouts and culvert damage during stormy weather last weekend, after water from heavy rain streamed down hillsides, overwhelming some ditches and culverts and collapsing road shoulders.

Six separate areas of the highway needed culvert replacement or basic road work, including a site where the rushing water caused piles of rocks and trees, the ministry said.

Culvert replacement was the main task on Wednesday.

Work on the 35-kilometre stretch of the highway that was damaged began immediately after the problems were discovered, the ministry said, adding geotechnical work was completed Sunday morning.

During the repair work, Port Renfrew-bound traffic has been temporarily detoured to Pacific Marine Road, which links the community to Lake Cowichan.

The ministry advised the public to check DriveBC for the most up-to-date information about reopening.
