B.C.’s police-watchdog agency is investigating an incident in which a woman was injured in an altercation after her arrest by Nanaimo RCMP on Thursday.

The Independent Investigations Office looks into police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury.

The IIO said Nanaimo RCMP were asked about 9 p.m. to do a wellness check on a woman believed to be threatening self harm.

She was also believed to be in violation of a release order.

The woman was arrested and taken to the RCMP detachment, where she was involved in an altercation when officers tried to move her into a cell.

She was injured in the process and transported to hospital by B.C. Emergency Health Services paramedics.

The IIO will confirm the extent of the woman’s injuries and determine what, if any, role the police had in the incident.
