Pro- and anti-logging demonstrations were held in the Lake Cowichan and Port Renfrew areas on Saturday amid continuing tensions over old-growth logging at Fairy Creek.
Dozens of people gathered along the highway holding signs expressing support for the forestry industry and its workers, at Mesachie Lake.
At Fairy Creek, at the headquarters of anti-logging organizers, 200 to 300 people gathered to listen to speeches and music, and to dance. Numerous cars were parked along Pacific Marine Road, forcing traffic down to one lane at times.
Protesters are trying to block old-growth logging at Fairy Creek and RCMP officers are on site to remove them from an exclusion zone. Several dozen people have been arrested.
