A kayaker, found unresponsive in an overturned kayak in Nanaimo’s Departure Bay, has died.

B.C. Emergency Health Services, ambulance crews and a supervisor were dispatched to the scene near Departure Bay beach around 2:17 p.m. Monday afternoon in response to reports of an overturned kayak and a man in the water.

Nanaimo RCMP and the Nanaimo Port Authority patrol were on scene, and media reports suggest they brought the man to shore.

Paramedics attempted to revive the man on the beach and he was eventually taken by ambulance to Nanaimo Regional Hospital.

It’s unclear how long the victim was in the water before he was discovered.

The B.C. Coroner's Service has confirmed it is investigating the death of a kayaker.

"As we're early in the process of trying to determine all of the facts, I have no additional information available at this time," said spokesman Ryan Panton.
