The Inn at Laurel Point has new zoning and new licence to expand in the future after the city approved a rezoning application.
Council unanimously approved the hotel’s rezoning application after a brief public hearing Thursday night.
The decision will allow the hotel to continue to use the site as it is, while allowing for an increase in density and site coverage at a future date.
The hearing, which heard no opposition, was required, as the hotel operates under a land-use contract.
The province has deemed that all land-use contracts will expire at the end of June 2024, meaning unless the zoning was changed, the site would revert to two zones for harbour and light-industrial activity. That would mean the hotel would technically become legally non-conforming.
The new zoning, approved Thursday night, means the hotel now has a site-specific zone allowing the use of the site as a hotel, and gives the company the right to expand the older north wing of the hotel in the future.
