Legislature won't be recalled, despite Clark's promise of more sessions

The B.C. legislature won't be recalled this fall, Liberal house leader Mike de Jong said Thursday.

The B.C. legislature won't be recalled this fall, Liberal house leader Mike de Jong said Thursday.

New cabinet ministers sworn in by Premier Christy Clark last week will instead focus on developing their ministry budgets, and MLAs will work on consulting British Columbians.

But the move was sharply criticized by the Opposition NDP, which accused the Liberals of trying to avoid public accountability by not reconvening in the capital.

"It's a mistake for the government not to come back to the legislature," said NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston.

He accused the Liberals of "jamming" through too much legislation in the spring and cutting short debate because they didn't have enough time.

Premier Clark had promised to hold more sessions of the legislature when she ran for Liberal party leader last year.
