A stolen pickup truck was driven into a fire hydrant by a suspected impaired driver early Friday in Langford, police say.

West Shore RCMP were called to the scene in the 900-block of Dunford Avenue about 1:15 a.m.

The Ford F150 was stuck and a 54-year-old man was walking away when officers arrived, police said.

They said the man, who tried to hide in a nearby bush, showed signs of alcohol impairment, and was arrested for impaired driving and possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Police discovered the truck had been stolen from Saanich on Monday and contained items stolen from a home in the 900-block of Dunford Avenue in Langford hours earlier.

The suspect was held in custody and later released with several conditions pending a court date early in the new year.
