A man alleged to have spit in a woman’s face while she was pushing a baby in a stroller in downtown Victoria is facing an assault charge.
The incident, believed to be a random attack, occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Quadra and Yates streets.
A Victoria police officer saw the suspect spit in the woman’s face as he walked by her in the opposite direction, police said.
The victim confirmed the assault, but left the area while the officer was arresting the suspect, police said.
After police issued a plea for the victim to come forward on Thursday, she contacted them and an assault charge was approved, police said.
The suspect is being held in custody for court.
“This suspect was arrested because of the quick actions of an officer doing routine patrols downtown,” said VicPD Const. Terri Healy, who thanked the victim for coming forward.
“We will continue to do proactive police work in the downtown core and beyond to ensure people can feel safe in their community.”
