A Victoria man has been charged with killing a dog outside a Hillside Avenue apartment building on Monday.
Brandon Norman Bartlett, 39, appeared in Victoria provincial court on Wednesday and agreed to remain in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 29.
On Monday, Victoria police were called to the Bellside Court apartment buildings in the 1300-block of Hillside Avenue, near Cook Street, about 4 p.m. after receiving a call about the death of a small dog.
They found a tenant had barricaded himself in his apartment. For three hours, officers tried to get the man to leave his apartment peacefully. However, he came out of the suite unexpectedly and police deployed an Arwen, a non-lethal bean-bag gun, said Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko.
Two loud bangs rang out about 6:45 p.m.
The man was arrested and taken to a hospital for physical and mental-health assessments. He was taken into custody when he was released from hospital.
Police have confirmed the suspect did not own the dog. They believe the dog had been stolen from a nearby home.
Jason Coté, a caretaker of the apartment building who saw the dog lying on the lawn on Monday, described it as a small dog, similar to a Chihuahua.
